When a child has cancer, where do I start?
Where do I start?
After diagnosis, treatment is the most important thing. Starting to treat cancer with the support of doctors, in specialized institutions, should be immediate.
Check with your doctor. Ask what you want! Don't be afraid, nobody's gonna judge you. You have to understand what this disease is about and how it can be fought. Do not forget that the doctor should answer your questions and you can ask everything you want to know how many times you need it.
Trust those around you. The emotional support staff and psychologists of the hostel House of Friendship and hospitals are here to help you. Allow you to help. Even if you are the one who will take care of your child, it is important to have the support of other people: friends, family, neighbors, volunteers, institutions, doctors, psychologists, etc. Ask for help when necessary, so that you feel strengthened.
Talk to your family. Take the time to explain to your child and the rest of the family what it means to have cancer. Talk about your feelings, it's important to lean on each other.
Let the school know what's going on. Go to the teacher and principal and explain what happens to your child, how long he or she will be absent, and the importance of having the support and understanding of teachers and peers. It is essential to inform them that cancer is NOT contagious.
Organize. Assess what is important to do now and what you can expect.
